Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper singer. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress and singer. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked the class at Irvington High School. Her parents divorced around the age of 10. Latifah attended a Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She went to at the Baptist church. Latifah is her name for stage when she turned eight. It means fragile in Arabic. Always tall, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward for her basketball team in high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's first group, made up of a number of MCs and the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an example of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah during that time was awed by her track. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
